AFL Grand Final 2024: Victoria’s Kelly’s Meats sells whole crocodiles to feed footy punters

The Northern Territory may not yet have a team in the AFL, but ahead of the Brisbane Lions and Sydney Swans 2024 grand final clash, punters can get a real taste of the Territory on their plate.

The Northern Territory may not yet have a team in the AFL, but ahead of the Brisbane Lions and Sydney Swans 2024 grand final clash, punters can get a real taste of the Territory on their plate.

Saltwater crocodiles, known to be eaten fried or grilled in the Northern Territory, have caught the attention of Victoria-based butchery Kelly’s Meats.

After first inquiring with their supplier eight years ago, the Kelly’s Meats is now heading into its second grand final special selling 10 crocs, priced at $30/kg.

The deadly reptiles were transported frozen from North Queensland to the Tooradin butcher’s doorstep, already skinned and with their heads cut off – ready to cook.

“Last year we had three, and the only pictures we had were frozen crocs,” owner of Kelly’s Meats, Luke said.

“I bought one and took pictures so people can see what they look like, so it is not just a frozen lump of crocodile – they are more inclined to buy them.”

The crocs – which weigh between eight and 10 kilos – completely sold out after being advertised for two days on the butchery’s website and social media pages.

Luke said the crocodiles had caught the attention of keen grillers and football punters who wanted to try something new while watching the biggest competition of the AFL season.

The butcher said he would aim to sell more and expand – just like the NT’s fight for its own AFL team – which will likely come with its own crocodile-inspired name.

“It is up in the air when they can get more in, I’m hoping it can be a more common occurrence,” Luke said.
