Alice Springs robbery sees the most common stolen item pinched again

Australia’s burglary rate is one of the highest in the world according to a Budget Direct survey which revealed 4.3 per cent of households experience at least one break-in or attempted break-in per year.

The survey which analysed Australian home burglary rates from April 2020 to April 2021 revealed personal items (such as jewellery, clothing, or handbags) are the most popular items for thieves, being reported stolen in 24.8% of break-ins.

It comes as a 60-year-old women returned home on Monday to find her property ransacked and multiple items of jewellery missing after it was broken into in broad daylight.

Four Jag watches – which sell for about $150 each – and a series of sentimental jewellery items were taken from the Larapinta home after the thief entered through the back of the property.

Police said the back door security screen was torn from its hinges before the thief ripped apart the home looking through numerous bags, cupboards, and rooms to locate the goods.

The police suspect the thief entered the Larapinta home sometime between 7am and 5pm Monday while the homeowner was at work.

Police records show this was the second time the home had been broken into in the past 12-months.

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed that tools were the 3rd-most stolen category items (following money), yet most Australians consider them far less likely to be taken.

As a result homeowners are far more likely to leave expensive tools unlocked and in easily accessible areas.

Anyone who has any information regarding the incident at Larapinta or has dashcam footage that may help the investigation is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
