Shoppers fuming over comedian's viral take on Kmart vs Target

"How dare you say that about Kmart!" one person commented on the TikTok.

Whether it’s their affordable dupes of expensive designer items, handy organisation products or super cheap, cute homewares, Kmart is king.

It’s the place to go for birthday gifts for kids’ parties, winter layering pieces or cheap plant pots so you can repot all your new plants before accidentally killing them.

But there’s another discount store that people used to love, and the quality was slightly better than Kmart. Remember Target?

There are still Targets around: 124 to Kmart's 325 to be exact.

Why did Kmart overtake Target? Maybe it’s as simple as price. Even though Target quality is generally better, Kmart is cheaper.

Comedian Jenny Tian posted a handy, hilarious comparison of the two stores on TikTok, and clearly she’s a Target fan.

Jenny’s TikTok started with the check-outs at Kmart and Target.

Target’s is by the door, which makes sense. Kmart’s is under a blue ring in the middle of the store, clearly designed for you to get sucked into buying more stuff on your way to paying.

Which brings us to her next point: that it’s impossible to “quickly pop by Kmart”.

“I’m just going to quickly pop by Target and get a notebook,” she role-played in the video, showing how she exited the store shortly after going in. In her hands was just the one notebook she had intended to buy.

Jenny did the same at Kmart and came out with a pile of things. “OK so I got this bag and this shirt and these really cute boots and these coat hangers… oh s**t I forgot the notebook!”

Jenny’s last point was about quality.

Commenting on her jeans, she said, “I’ve had them forever, I got them at Target.”

In the next scene she lamented her Kmart jeans. “I can’t believe these $2 Kmart jeans evaporated in the wash!”

TikTok responds to Kmart vs Target debate

The commentary about quality resonated with followers.

“The swimsuits in Kmart say ‘do not get wet’ on the tags,” one person noted.

“I agree with all this but I still like Kmart better,” said another.

But most people defended their beloved discount store.

“I actually got jeans on clearance for $2 at Kmart and they are my favourite pair haahaha,” one person said.

“I love Kmart, how dare you!” said another.

“Kmart is WAY better than Target,” a third person said.
