'Shocked and appalled': Parents notice strange detail on school timetable

"I’ve never seen that before," someone commented. But others say it's the norm.

When it comes to school timetables, it can’t get too complicated.

Especially in the younger years, the hours your little one spends at school are always the same, and their schedule will be something along the lines of ‘classes, recess, more classes, lunch, and then more classes’.

Except when it’s not.

One Aussie parent has taken to social media shocked about one detail on their child’s timetable, and the rest of the internet has thoughts.

Is this the norm?

An Aussie dad has taken to Reddit to share his child’s new school timetable.

Session 1 starts at 8.55am, followed by play time at lunch at 10.55am, and eating time in their classroom at 11.25am. After another session of learning, they go into play time at recess at 1.30pm, and eating time at 2pm.

There was one detail that left the dad shocked.

“Lunch first then recess in arvo now?” he wrote in the post.

“UnAustralian”

Commenters on the post were just as appalled by the ‘backwards’ schedule.

“Shocked and appalled,” said one person.

“What in the backwards f*ck is that schedule? That’s nuts,” another agreed.

“UnAustralian m8,” said a third.

“This happened more than a decade ago when I was teaching”

However, others said it was normal now, blaming the change on the Aussie heat.

“My primary school made this switch in the 90s because in summer it keeps kids out of the sun for the hottest part of the day,” one person shared.

“This happened more than a decade ago when I was teaching. The idea was to have a longer break before the sun is at its peak,” said another.

“My son's school did this after having to cancel lunch a lot due to heat in the summer. They switched so the longer break would be earlier in the day and the kids would get more time outside,” another agreed.

Others suggested it was due to a rise in students skipping breakfast.

“My school did this switch as we had a number of kids not eating breakfast. Having lunch first means hopefully they eat something healthy rather than filling up on junk as their first meal of the day,” said one commenter.

“They do this because some kids don't have breakfast and need a big meal earlier in the day to give their brains enough fuel to go on with,” another person said.

Maybe that’s not the weirdest part…

But, everyone agreed that the weirdest part was seeing playtime scheduled before a meal, instead of after.

“What I find interesting about the school set up is that the kids get to play first and then eat second. I’ve never seen that before,” one commenter pointed out.

“I’d be more concerned about why they are running around at lunch, then eating, then being expected to learn,” another agreed.

“Play time before eating time is extremely strange. I've never seen that,” said a third.
