A Middle Ridge family checking on their home renovations has instead disturbed an unwanted visitor.
Snake catcher Anthony Adams, of Anthony’s Snake Relocating, was called out to rescue a five foot coastal carpet python on January 2, who had curled up in the kitchen following a big feed.
“There were two houses on the block and over Christmas they hadn’t been inside one of them for a few days,” Mr Adams said.
“The caller said the kids must have left the door open at some stage and when they came in there he was, lying curled up on the kitchen floor.”
Mr Adams said the family had been excited with the find.
“He wasn’t very fast moving,” Mr Adams said.
“(The father) had called the kids over for a look and they were asking lots of questions – they weren’t scared of it.
“He said if it had been out in the yard they would have left it alone.”
Mr Adams said the snake had managed to find a meal before it took a rest.
“I’ve heard people say it might have been a cat, which is possible, but it could have been a possum or a bandicoot,” Mr Adams said.
“They won’t move much at all with something like that in their belly, often I’ve had calls where they’ve gotten into a bird or guinea pig cage and they can’t squeeze out from between the bars.
“Pythons are one of the most common snakes I catch around Toowoomba, nearly every day I’m getting one out of a property along the edge of the range.”
Mr Adams said he later released the snake in a bushland area.
