Mum slams teen daughter for $315 holiday spending act

"We gave our daughter that cash to last four days. It didn't even last an arvo."

The price tag we put on pocket money is a dangerous game, and one mum has come to learn that the hard way. 

Meredith’s 16-year-old daughter went away for a four day holiday with a friend, who was celebrating a birthday.  

For the trip her daughter was given $200USD ($315AUD) in cash to cover her expenses for both food and fun.

"Lost their f***ing minds" 

She’s turned to TikTok to verify if she’d short changed her daughter, in a clip which has since divided opinion and gained viral status. 

About two hours into the trip Meredith says they received a notification that she had used the joint family credit card. 

The teenager’s father noticed the spend first, and questioned why she would need more money so soon. 

But the spending didn’t stop there. A few hours later they received a second notification alerting them the card had been used again. 

That night they called their daughter seeking some sort of explanation. 

“We’re like ‘hey what’s going on? Why are you using our credit card?’ She goes ‘well that’s for food'.” 

“I said ‘I don’t what that means? That’s for food? We gave you $200 for food, for fun, for a fantastic time.’ And she goes ‘oh no. Food doesn’t count in that $200'.” 

The teenager insisted, “The $200 was mine.”

The mother was left astonished by the response. 

“I think every teenager on this planet has lost their minds. Absolutely lost their f***ing minds,” she told viewers, accusing her daughter of being entitled.

"Apologise to your daughter" 

Her video was hit with backlash against the mum's unrealistic perspective, which has led to Meredith turning comments off on the post. 

However, she addresses the criticism in an eight minute follow up post. 

The comment section on the new video didn't garner the understanding she was likely hoping for. 

“Did you apologise to your daughter?” one commenter questioned

“It’s not the amount of cash. It’s the way you spoke about your daughter and continue to speak down,” another pointed out. 

One person thought the spending amount was the issue: “$200 for a weekend (two days) is fine, $200 for four days is not enough.” 

“Unless your kid is going to a cabin in the woods, $200 is not enough. You should try that yourself!” another agreed.

In the video, Meredith tackles these opinions head on. 

“TikTok believes I owe them an apology,” she says a bit sarcastically. 

She reveals she regrets making the first video, but she’s not sorry about the amount she gave her daughter.
