‘He was so worried his mummy and the baby weren’t going to be ok’

“After she didn’t feel the baby kick for hours, we rushed to the hospital and sent our three-year-old to daycare. His reaction broke our hearts,” the dad reveals.

The early symptoms of pregnancy

Noah is only three years old, but like many kids his age, the little boy already takes in and understands so much of what’s happening in his family.

That’s why when his pregnant mum Corena was rushed to hospital worried that she hadn’t felt the baby kick for hours, Noah was beside himself with concern.

“My wife had an emergency ultrasound appointment, and because we only have one car, we had to drop Noah off at daycare on the way,” dad Jack explained in a Reddit post.

“He was worried about his mum and baby brother before we left the house.

“We told him his brother was just sleeping, and he seemed totally fine by the time we dropped him off. Internally, I was starting to panic.”

Noah was not fine though.

According to his daycare teachers, he was silent all morning, not interacting with anyone.

But when Jack called the daycare in the afternoon to report that the ultrasound showed the baby was OK, Noah’s reaction broke his dad’s heart.

Little boy scared mum will lose baby

“I called the centre to report everything was fine, even though I wasn’t sure he’d remember anything from the morning,” Jack said.

But Noah had been processing his parents' fears all day.

“Messaging me was a great call,” the teacher replied to Jack. “Noah hadn’t said anything about it to anyone this morning but he was very worried.

“He melted into my arms and cried for a minute. He was very excited to know that his mummy and brother are both OK and he was feeling much better after we talked.

“He’s looking forward to getting home and seeing her. He thought it was very rude of his brother to take a nap and make his mummy so worried.”

Jack said he shared the story to process the emotional roller coaster of the day, and also to show people how much three-year-old children can actually understand and take in.

“He’s going to be such a great older brother,” the proud dad wrote.

Reddit community in tears over dad’s story

The Reddit community had a huge emotional response to Jack’s story. Some shared experiences that ended in heartbreak.

“As a mum who had a miscarriage, I was reading this with trepidation, and I’m relieved and bawling now,” one person said.

Others had uplifting tales.

“We had a scare this weekend too,” another wrote. “I’m very early in my pregnancy and we told our toddler who is three that I have a baby in my belly. This weekend I went to the bathroom and wiped away a large amount of blood… we told our toddler everything is ok but mummy needs to go to the doctor. We dropped him at my mother-in-law and heard him say, ‘Mama went to the doctor. She has a baby in her belly and it’s not OK'.

“We never gave any impression to him that things were not OK, but he was very sad. The baby was fine in the end… and that’s how our toddler announced our very early pregnancy to our entire family.”

Many thought Jack’s parenting was spot on.

“I wanted to commend you for excellent parenting,” one person said. “The fact that your recognised he might like an update right away shows how much you respect and empathise with your child.”
