‘Avoidable’: Byron Bay couple investigated after twins die in ‘wild birth’

“They did nothing during the pregnancy,” said a medical spokesperson, who claimed the couple wasn’t even aware they were expecting twins.

Common discomforts of pregnancy

A Byron Bay couple are being investigated after a pair of twins died during a botched home birth.

Police are investigating the NSW parents, who were reportedly in a movement called “wild birthing”, where people choose to avoid using Western medicine in the leadup to the birth.

Also known as a “free birth”, it sometimes involves no ultrasounds, no heartbeat tests or checks, medical examinations, or midwifery assistance.

Twins’ death ‘avoidable’, said medical spokesperson

A medical source told The Daily Telegraph the couple had no idea they were expecting twins.

“They did nothing during the pregnancy,” the source said. “All they needed to do was one check to discover they were having twins.”

The twins were born premature but at a viable gestation period of 23 weeks.

Sadly, the Byron Bay parent gave birth to a stillborn, with the second child dying shortly after arriving at Tweed Hospital.

"NSW Ambulance paramedics treated two babies, one died at the scene, and another was taken hospital where it died," a police spokesperson told Kidspot

According to the medical source, the deaths were “tragic” and “avoidable.”

“At least the second was born viable. If it was born in hospital, it had a chance,” they said. “That child had rights.”

It’s understood NSW Police are now investigating the deaths, but no charges have been laid. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

“It’s common knowledge there are a lot of home births that don’t go to plan, but this is tragic because it was avoidable,” said a police spokesperson.
