A mum who kept a bedside vigil when her son was in a coma has shared the agony of just missing the moment he wakes up.

Tayane Gandra, who has 1.8 million followers on TikTok, posted a clip of her racing to be reunited with her eight-year-old - and it's been viewed more than 125 million times.

"16 days without leaving your side"

Tayane's relief is obvious as she runs down the hospital's hallway, to her son, Gui's, room. But there's also a tinge of mum guilt for having not been there, despite all her efforts, and hearing that he was asking for her.

The mum flings open the door and Gui immediately bursts into tears and reaches his arms out for her. Their moving embrace is testament to the bond between and mother and her child.

On Instagram, Tayane explains:

"It's been 16 days without leaving your side, and on the only day that mom is going to sleep at home you decide to wake up from your restorative sleep!

"Receive daddy's video call @estevaonautica with you calling for me, demanding that I go running, oh my son, as mom flew here to get there soon and hug you!

"You are our most beautiful miracle, thank you for being so ours, we love you to infinity and beyond."

"I'm crying like a baby"

Gui, from Brazil, had been in a coma for 16 days after contracting pneumonia. He was diagnosed at birth with a rare skin condition called dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (a severe blistering skin disease).

The moving clip quickly went viral, and comments section doesn't contain a dry eye.

"The way he cried out for his mum, there's nothing to make my cry this easily but kids crying for their mums," wrote one viewer.

"I'm crying like a baby. His voice - that broke my heart. Especially when he said: mama," added another.

"God give this little boy's body [power] to recover for his condition, please take his pain away," wrote a third.

Tayane and her family are devoutly religious, so many sent prayers and wishes for Gui's speedy recovery.

The touching story has made international headlines in Brazil, and even attracted the attention of Gui's football heroes, who visited him in hospital.

"She should never have left him"

The viral clip has been widely shared across social media channels, and despite its message of love and hope, has been criticized by trolls.

One example reads, "She should have never left him in the first place, if I was in her shoes my bed would be on his room floor, I wouldn't leave him alone unless I was going to the toilet.

"Recovering from a coma is a scary thing for an adult never mind a child."

Tayane has also been shamed for filming the moment.

"You filmed this for clicks, such a private thing," one troll wrote.

But it was Tayane's choice to film and post, and in doing so, she has raised awareness of children living with painful, chronic conditions - and let their families know they're not alone.
