Aussie mum calls out 'disco booty shorts' at Kmart - for 2yos

"Is it too much to ask for a pair of shorts that covers my child's nappy?"

Mum calls out Kmart selling silver micro shorts for 3yos

When Aussie mum Elli Tamar headed into Kmart to grab some summer shorts for her toddler, she was outraged by what she found.

Which is why she had to share her shocking experience with her 220K+ followers on TikTok.

"What 2yo is wearing disco booty shorts?"

Browsing in the toddler girls' section, Elli pulls out a tiny pair of silver shorts. She asks viewers, "What two-year-old is wearing disco booty shorts? Her butt cheeks would be hanging out of these."

The mum continues to show other girls' shorts, and remarks on one pair, "The crotch is longer than the shorts."

Elli finally selects a pair of shorts from the boys' section, because they are longer.

She captions the clip, "I just want shorts that look like real shorts and not underwear."

With almost 1 million views, the video garnered more than 1k comments. One of the most-liked was, "When I saw those silver ones in store I thought of that Kylie Minogue music video."

"Would a nappy even fit?"

In the comments section, many parents agreed with Elli.

"Would a nappy even fit in it?" one mum asked incredulously, with another writing, "Finally someone really gets it!"

However, some mums were sure that the item was designed to be worn with leggings or bike pants underneath, and others suggested doing so as a solution.

Then there was this perspective, which largely hasn't been mentioned in previous debates about Kmart shorts:  "They're not actually that short when they're worn."

One mum added, "We talked about this at playgroup and that's what a lot said: that they look shorter on the hanger."

Girls' clothing revolution

The day of reckoning about girls' clothing in general has well and truly arrived, with a parent sharing concerns about the fit or style of an item.

The debate has now even extended to the double standards in gendered clothing, with many noting this year that the messaging is often feminine or masculine, and unnecessarily so.
