'How is this garbage legal?': Aussies think fees have gone too far

“And they wonder why nobody goes to the cinema anymore...”

The ALDI sale's gone cold and left people unimpressed

We all know how it goes when it comes to those sneaky added fees.

Whether it’s on food delivery, concert tickets, or seeing a movie, the price will start at what feels like a reasonable amount, before going up and up and up thanks to miscellaneous ‘service’ and ‘handling’ fees.

Aussies are now claiming that it’s officially gone too far.

“How is this garbage legal?”

An Aussie Reddit user has taken to the platform after trying to buy movie tickets at their local Village cinema.

The ticket, originally priced at just $10 (an absolute bargain to go to the movies these days) ends up costing them over $5 more.

“My $10 Village movie ticket actually costs $13.60 then becomes $15.30 at checkout,” the poster wrote.

“How is this garbage legal?”

“And they wonder why nobody goes to the cinema anymore…”

Commenters on the post agreed that the pricing was ridiculous, blaming this as one of the many reasons we’ve seen a decline in people going to the movies at all.

“And they wonder why nobody goes to the cinema anymore,” one person said.

“Yes dodgey. Also that concession price is hilarious! 90c discount? What a joke,” said another.

“Cinemas are reserved for extremely unique releases now. Or niche re-showings of old movies that came out before I could catch them,” a third agreed.

Some even suggested that this may not be legal, encouraging the poster to report it to the ACCC.

“This is called drip pricing and it is in fact not legal. Report it to the ACCC,” one person said.

“Yep! The ACCC can only act on things like this when people complain about it. Otherwise they have no idea it’s happening! Be the hero we need,” another agreed.

It’s everywhere!

However, many agreed that as frustrating as this is, it may just be a sign of the times, with the vast majority of sellers in most industries adding an exorbitant amount of fees after the fact.

“Wait until you see what happens when you try to buy a $5 kids ticket at ticketmaster! Bunch of crooks,” said one person.

“I went to buy tickets for the Edinburgh Tattoo coming to Brisbane. Tickets were $60 odd, with fees, $90 odd. That's outrageous,” said another.

“All the entertainment venues have similar atrocities. I believe there might be an inquiry into event fees? This should apply to cinemas too!” a third stated.

Kidspot has reached out to Village and the ACCC for comment.
