Sales of non-alcoholic drinks rising

For those taking a break from booze this month, we’re on the home stretch.

After a month off grog, here are six tried, tested and delicious drinks to pour in your glass for your next hiatus.

NEW STATE FUNCTIONAL SPRITZ: $6.50 per can, $22 four-pack

A grown-up, dry spritz bound to scratch that cocktail-hour itch. The Western Australian brand is launching its first batch of softies in August. Layered with fruit, botanicals and ‘calming amino acids’ such as L-theanine, the caffeine-free drinks will have you slipping into the weekend with ease. Strawberry, hibiscus and pepperberry is my favourite. Watch out for the quenching sparkling hop waters, in yuzu, peach and passionfruit flavours, also landing soon.

HIATUS BEERS LAGER: $5 a can

After the success of their gluggable pacific ale, Hiatus Beer has released a lively new lager ahead of the Aussie summer. Crisp, smashable and frothing with malt and citrus, the faux beer gives the real deal a run for its money. Also worth trying the OG pacific ale (look for the yellow can) for a taste of the tropics.

LYRE’S ITALIAN ORANGE, AGAVE BLANCO SPIRIT: $47/$45

Very rarely do non-alch spirits come close to tasting like the real thing, but Lyre’s has given it a solid crack. The versatile Italian orange can be shaken with Lyre’s London Dry Gin and Aperitif Rosso for a zero-proof negroni, the Rosso and soda for an Americano or orange sec for an Aperol spritz alternative. More of a margarita mover and shaker? Mix agave blanco with a generous glug of fresh lime juice and orange sec for best results.

While Monte Stella by Melbourne’s kombucha kids Monceau uses grapes plucked from Tahbilk’s Box Grove Vineyard in northern Victoria to riff on sparkling wine alternative. Tea is added for tannins, before fermentation with ultra-low alcohol yeast culture to create a 0.5 ABV drink. A hint of tonic rounds out the palate.

PALERMO AMARINO APERITIF: $13.99

Sweet and bitter like candied orange, powdered with layers of spice, herbs and botanicals. A Campari copycat minus the booze. Made by France’s second-largest spirit manufacturer, this high-quality drop doesn’t come with the bougie price tag. Mix with soda water and ice for an Americano deadringer, or on its own.
