Inside the eerie abandoned floating McDonald’s

IT might not be on your bucket list, but for some it’s the stuff dreams are made of. Macca’s floats an idea to bring back the original McBarge.

IF YOU love the ocean and good, old-fashioned, fast-food hold onto your mainsail.

McDonald’s previously abandoned floating restaurant is getting a second wind. It may prove to be the fast food facelift of the decade.

The ‘McBarge’ was built in 1986 for the World Exposition held in Vancouver, Canada. The restaurant’s aim was to showcase future innovations in both architecture and technology.

However, the novelty of ordering a Big Mac on the high seas soon wore off. Over the last 30 years the ‘McBarge’ has fallen into disrepair and has sat abandoned just offshore of Burrard Inlet in southwestern British Columbia.

In its prime.

Until now; The restaurant is set to receive a multi-million dollar makeover. The ‘McBarge’s’ current owner, Howard Meakin, has lifted anchor and made port in Maple Ridge where the 57m-long vessel will undergo a $4 million renovation.

While most of the details are being kept under wraps, the barge will be completely remodelled and refitted to coincide with the exposition’s 30th anniversary.

“I can’t tell you what the plan is. We’re under a nondisclosure agreement, but it fits in with the 30th anniversary of the exposition. It will all happen in 2016, and we expect that it’s going to take probably most of the year to do the work,” Meakin told The Vancouver Sun.

Meakin remains coy about the ‘McBarge’s’ final port of call. Sadly it looks like Australian burger fans will have to fly stateside to set sail with their Happy Meal.
