Kat Clark has clapped back at trolls who claim it is “embarrassing” she dresses “like a 20-year-old”.
The popular TikTok star, who lives on the Gold Coast, is sadly no stranger to copping unsolicited comments about her fashion choices from people she’s never met.
But while she’s developed a thick skin, the 38-year-old said the number of nasty remarks coming her way had increased dramatically lately, so she decided to poke fun at her critics with a humorous video.
“It’s actually stupid. I’m getting it quite a bit lately so I had to say something,” the mum-of-two told news.com.au.
“What you choose to wear should be your decision and no one else’s. There’s no expiration date on style.
“Dress how you want when you’re 18 or 80. Who cares, as long as you’re happy that’s all that matters.”
To really prove her point, Ms Clark filmed a video in response to one critic, who suggested that she needed to dress to suit her own age rather than that of her daughters, Latisha, 21, and Deja, 14.
“It’s embarrassing … she dresses like a 20yo. Sorry Kat, but as a mature woman you would look way more sexier if you dressed to your age and not your kids ages,” they rudely stated.
And the outfit that had prompted such an outrageous comment? A video of Clark dancing alongside her youngest child in a white miniskirt and denim boob tube.
So Ms Clark headed into an op shop to try and find an outfit trolls would deem “appropriate”.
“I need something that screams ‘mature’,” she states in the video, before picking three modest outfits that covered her body.
She also picked out a pair of red ballet pumps, teasing: “Flats are more mature, I’m too old for heels.”
The video then proceeds to show Ms Clark trying on the outfits, as fans jumped into her comments to defend her.
“Please don’t change your clothing for the love of God,” one pleaded.
“Kat I love your style, keep it up. You’re a great mum, ignore the hate,” said someone else.
As another raged: “Anyone can wear whatever you want as long as you’re comfortable at ANY AGE.”
“You have me in stitches! Stick with immature lovely. You’re hot,” chipped in one more.
“Don’t change your style for anyone else Kat, you look beautiful in whatever outfit,” another stated.
Others got in on the joke, revealing which look they preferred of the three options.
“The last one made you look like my English teacher,” one teased.
“OMG in the first one you look like little bow peep,” remarked another.
As someone else mused: “The second one actually looks so good on you.”
“You really do look good in anything,” said another.
“Stop, this is so funny,” replied someone else.
She later showed off her “diabolic” new outfit to her husband after purchasing it from the op shop.
It’s not the first time Ms Clark, who has 7.1 million followers on TikTok, has had to call out strangers who comment on her appearance.
“Every day I receive nasty comments about my outfits,” she told news.com.au in December.
“I have started posting a lot more styling videos on my Instagram and have received so much backlash for my choice of clothing.
“There was a particular dress I wore recently that I decided not to wear a bra with and a lot of people were offended by this.
“People were commenting, asking me to ‘put a bra on’ and to ‘have a little respect for myself’.
“A few people said they were ‘disgusted’ because I was a mother and didn’t have a bra on.”
Ms Clark, who first went viral for looking like her then teen daughter’s “twin” sister in June 2021, said some of the crueller remarks about her outfits have “insinuated I’m overweight” while others have said she’s “too old”.
“In another Instagram post I wore a lacy top and people were body shaming me for the veins in my chest,” she explained.
“There’s always lots of negative comments on Facebook about my choice of clothing too, saying I should ‘size up’ and ‘cover up’ more.”
While Ms Clark states she tries to “ignore the negative remarks”, she said the sheer volume of them can make it a difficult task sometimes.
“It’s actually mind blowing to me that people are offended by what I chose to wear,” the 2022 Australian TikTok “Creator of the Year” winner said.
“It’s especially surprising to me that other women were tearing me down.
“I try to be strong and ignore the negative comments but when you see so many come through about how you look it does make you start to feel a little insecure.”
