The Friends of the Empire are in the spotlight this week as Australia celebrates all things volunteer as part of National Volunteer Week.
Behind the Toowoomba’s iconic Empire Theatre is a league of trusty volunteers passionate about keeping the show going known as Friends of the Empire.
The independent volunteer group are the frills and lining of the theatre, a constant friendly face as patrons make their way to their seats, or supply baked goods to the performers backstage.
President of the Friends Margaret Turnbull has been with the Empire since it reopened in 1997 and her steadfast dedication to the shows that came through its doors is seen in the 20 years of her service as Events Manager.
Ms Turnbull, alongside Gay Jorgensen, Bob Crapp, and Bernie Ingle are just a few of the faces that deserve many thanks and praise during National Volunteer Week between May 20 - 25.
From volunteering at ParkRun each week, to taking an hour a fortnight to chat with an elderly person, or joining the Friends of the Empire, Toowoomba has a vast array of volunteering opportunities.
