A real-life nightmare

This week, an Aussie man took to Reddit posting a disgusting photo of a container he pulled out of his pantry.

“Found this accidental terrarium in our [pantry],” he said.

Inside the plastic container looks like what used to be everything bagel seasoning, but is now infested with insects.

Commenters on the post were quick to call out the presence of pantry moths.

“Pantry moths are a nightmare,” one said.

“I dealt with them for years. Had to throw so much away and purge the pantry/deep clean multiple times.”

“I went through the same thing, I have PTSD every time I see a moth indoors now. They can get into closed jars if they aren't air tight because the larvae can crawl in between the spaces on your screw-on lids,” replied another.

“Sometimes there's just nothing you can do because the food is contaminated in the factory or grocery store if you buy in bulk. I've had completely sealed bags of grains with moths in them.”

Well… say goodbye to your grains!

Others were doing their best to help the poster, encouraging them to go through the rest of their pantry as a precaution.

“You should probably go through your entire pantry and throw away anything that’s grain based,” one said.

“Those are pantry moths and they get into absolutely everything.”

Some, though, are questioning how it ended up like that in the first place.

“I really have to ask, why would you ever put a paper towel between the lid and the container?” one asked.

“This seems like it can only result in compromising the seal and causing all kinds of issues.”
