ALDI shopper fuming over conflicting egg policy

"Trying to shame a customer at the registers is bull"

At this point in time, the egg shortage feels like the gift that keeps on giving.

First, there were limits on how many we could purchase. Then, stock was so low that stores ended up using the space for everything from Easter eggs to Arnott’s Shapes.

Now, as it all starts to feel never-ending, shoppers are becoming more and more unsure of where they stand - and it’s become clear that retailers are, too.

“I don’t see the problem”

A Brisbane ALDI shopper has taken to social media after having a confusing interaction with a staff member at her local supermarket.

The woman said that despite there being no signs stating this would be the case, she wasn’t allowed to purchase the three cartons of eggs she was after, and instead was limited to just two.

“Was told today it's now ‘managers discretion’ whether to put a limit on the number of eggs we can buy,” she said in her post.

“There are no signs anywhere saying I cannot buy more than two cartons (I wanted three) and argued with the cashier that nowhere is indicated that there's a limit. No signage. There was still lots of stock left and it was already the afternoon, so I don't see the problem.

“I'm totally fine with the limit if it's indicated!!”

“Trying to shame a customer at the registers is bull”

Commenters agreed that the interaction was ridiculous, saying that at the very least, there should have been a sign.

“We’ve been told at our store we can not implement a limit … Multiple people buy a whole box and it does my head in aha but we can’t stop them. Obviously all have their own rules but definitely should have signage if they are going to implement it,” said one staff member in the comments.

“When there is signage displayed then everybody knows the limit. The reason you needed 3 cartons of eggs is not relevant. The fact that there wasn’t a sign is not helpful to customers when there is clearly ambiguity over what the limit is or isn’t,” another commenter agreed.

“Aldi is the [asshole] for not having a sign - trying to shame a customer at the registers is bull,” said a third.

“If there's signage limits are 100% ok. If there's no sign it's a bit steep. I also agree, it's late in the day they should have let it go,” another person said.

“There needs to be signs. What if you have a large family? Or like in our case a family of 5 that can go through a dozen eggs for breakfast,” said another.

“Maybe a limit is useful”

ALDI has yet to have an overarching limit on eggs at any point during the shortage, and confirmed to Kidspot that this is still the case.

However, if this trend is to continue, some shoppers suggest it may be better in the long run.

“I've struggled to get eggs from Aldi for weeks so maybe a limit is useful,” said one commenter.

“Because they go so fast!! If I go to [ALDI] at 12pm there’s never any eggs, it’s only fair for the other people,” another agreed.
