5 things I thought watching tonight’s episode of MAFS

"By the end of the episode, I really didn’t expect to feel this way."

New MAFS trailer teases groom's wild exit

If we’re being completely honest here, I don’t like reality TV.

Actually, scratch that, I hate it.

But when your job is to watch ALL the reality TV to keep you up to date, well, you kind of don’t have a choice.

As I sat down this evening to watch the new season of MAFS, I wasn’t too happy, but I grabbed my notebook, humphed my way to the couch and turned on Channel 9 to watch it along with you all.

By the end of the episode, the five things I wrote down surprised me, and I didn’t expect to feel this way.

I... kind of liked it.

1- It seems the experts actually know their stuff

From the ads I’ve seen of MAFS over the years, it seemed all the experts were looking for was drama.

However, after seeing the first couple walk down the aisle, it seems like the drama may be a byproduct of people setting their expectations too high, and the judges can only do so much.

Sydney-based nutritionist Sara and Gold Coast online business owner Tim were the first couple we met on tonight’s episode.

Sara lived in Colombia until she was five and Tim’s favourite country to live and visit is Colombia- tick!

They are both active, love adventures and prioritise their health- tick!

They weigh their food- as if anyone can be bothered? but tick!

However, the honeymoon phase took an unexpected turn when Tim revealed his recent breakup, leaving Sara questioning if he was truly ready for a new commitment, and honestly, I can’t really blame her.

Tim shared with his new bride he was planning on proposing to his ex-girlfriend before he found out she cheated on him, all of six months ago!

I mean, I have hummus dip in my fridge older than that, and I’d be worried I was a rebound, just as I think Sara was.

And then there was the best man speech.

If there was ever a speech that took out the worst I've ever heard, this guy would take out the top spot.

2- Can I get an invite to Cassandra’s for dinner?

Cassandra is full of “light and joy”, as described by the experts, although her life has been marred with tragedy.

She lost her high school sweetheart and boyfriend of eight years in a motorbike accident, and losing her mum to cancer left Cass shocked and heartbroken.

“We would have definitely married and had kids and worn silly matching vacation shirts,” she revealed through tears.

But for me, the person who stole the show was Cass’ dad, Moddy, and I wouldn’t mind an invite to her place for a family dinner to meet him.

He seems like the kind of guy I’d be happy to sit and watch MAFS with each night.

3- Tristan needs to be protected at all costs

Can someone find Tristian, wrap him in a warm blanket and keep him safe?

My heart absolutely melted when the 30-year-old told expert Mel that he feels he is undeserving of love, putting the root cause down to growing up overweight.

His nerves provided comic relief as he mistook Cassandra's sister for his new wife during the ceremony.

I think Tristian is ‘nice guys finish last’ personified, and I hope Cass’ warmth and light can help him see he’s worthy of love.

4- Everyone needs a Lucinda

I recently read a parenting book called The Danish Way of Parenting and learned so much about the Danes’ way of raising kids.

One key takeaway I took from the book is the art of ‘reframing’ or readjusting your perspective on a situation.

I could feel the 43-year-old MC and wedding celebrant's warmth and energy through my TV and her ability to take what the other brides-to-be were saying and spin it into a positive.

“I like a nerd,” 32-year-old Physio Natalie told Lucinda.

To which she replied she can appreciate Natalie is an intellectual and wants someone to challenge her mentally.

Lucinda seems like she’s expertly learned the art of reframing, and I can’t wait to follow this earth mama’s journey to ever after.

5- These weddings are super boujee!

Ok, so not a juicy one, but I feel it needs to be said.

The flowers at the two weddings tonight were next level, and if I were getting married, I’d be looking up those florists’ details ASAP.
