What’s on: 10 things to do around the Darling Downs this weekend

Grab out the picnic blankets and prepare yourself for a good time, with a number of fun-filled outdoor events happening in and around the Darling Downs over the weekend. Check out what’s on here.

The temperatures might be dropping but there’s at least 10 reasons for you to get out of the house and warm up in the sun this weekend around the Darling Downs region.

See what’s on below.

1. Picnic with the sunflowers

There’s nothing more likely to put a smile on your dial than a field of sunflowers, with Ten Chain Farm located in Upper Flagstone hosting a weekend full of activities from 9am-3pm Saturday and Sunday.

2. Weekend markets

There’s a variety of markets on across the region this weekend, including the Toowoomba Farmers Market, outside Cobb & Co Museum from 7am-midday Saturday and the Makers Market, Goods Shed on Victoria St from 8am-1pm Sunday,

3. Garden City country music concert

Enjoy some live country music at St John’s Lutheran Hall at 431 Bridge St from 12.30pm on Sunday. Entry is $8 and includes lucky door ticket and afternoon tea.

4. Tarmac Fun Fly Day

Join the Toowoomba Amateur Radio Model Aero Club in celebrating their 50th anniversary for a fun day, with proceeds raised going to Angel Flight. Bring your favourite model aircraft and compete in a variety of categories. Flying begins at 9am on Sunday. There will also be a car boot sale so be prepared to find a bargain.

To find the club head south from Toowoomba on Ruthven St, they are off the right side of the New England Highway, about 14 km from the CBD at 13292 New England Highway, Hodgson Vale.

5. Arts and crafts

This weekend across the region a number of groups will be hosting arts and crafts workshops.

Lino Block printing at Tinker will be from 2pm-6pm Saturday. Tickets available at tinkerart.com.au.

Handprint art exhibition will be at The Starving Artist Collaborative, 36/57 Brook St, Toowoomba at 3pm on Sunday. The exhibition runs until July 7.

6. Model Railway open weekend

The Toowoomba Model Railway Club is conducting a Model Railway Open Weekend from 9am to 5pm Saturday and 9am to 4pm Sunday. The event will be held in the clubrooms at the Toowoomba Showgrounds and feature an extensive Model Railway Museum covering the early clockwork days with lots of in between eras. There will also the Baillies Boys Show with many carnival rides as well as a train carrying sightseers around the perimeter of the carnival.

7. Star gazing

Look up at the sky and see the beauty of the stars, galaxies, planets and crescent moon.

The University of Southern Queensland and Ournightsky Astronomy will be holding a stargazing session to look through a telescope and into outer space.

Participants can meet the event organisers on the south side of the main drive to the UniSQ off West St, opposite the Gumbi Gumbi Gardens. A sign will also be displayed near one of the flagpoles to show directions.

Running from 5.45pm to 7.45pm on Saturday, the event is weather dependent and will be cancelled if it becomes too cloudy, rains or storms. The event is free.

8. WordFest Toowoomba Author Expo

Literary lovers can get their creative juices flowing with a host of workshops on Saturday.

Held at Toowoomba Regional Council Library from 9.30am to 2.15pm the WordFest Author Expo will feature topics including comedy, travel, young adult, zines, scrips, lyrics or you can borrow a living book for 15 minutes.

9. PETstock adoption day

Street Cat Alliance and PETstock Toowoomba will be holding their monthly barbecue fundraiser and adoption day on Saturday from 10am to 2pm at their Anzac Ave store.

Meet the team, grab a sausage and a drink and learn more about fostering, volunteering or even better meet a new furry best friend.

10. Bike enthusiasts meet

Hosted by Toowoomba Bike Enthusiasts, this monthly catch-up is a chance to show off your two-wheel pride and joy to other motorcycle fanatics.

Held at the carpark of Super Cheap Auto on James St the gathering starts at 5.30pm on Saturday.
