Toowoomba State High School students to perform Ben Elton’s We Will Rock You

The jukebox musical, jam-packed with Queen’s greatest hits, will rock Toowoomba State High School.

In a dystopian world where live music is banned and the citizens are kept docile on a diet of corporate-approved synthetic music, Galileo, a young student, is plagued with bizarre visions.

He dreams of instruments hidden on the planet, instruments that will give him the power to ‘break free’ from the clutches of the evil Killer Queen.

With the help of two ageing hippie librarians, Buddy and Holly, Galileo and his fellow nonconformist misfit Scaramouche go in search of rock’s Holy Grail—Brian May’s guitar.

This is the plot of Ben Elton’s We Will Rock You and if it sounds silly, that’s because it is.

The tongue-in-cheek jukebox musical does not take itself seriously and neither should its audience.

“It is a weird plot but a simple plot,” actor Luke Parker said.

The Toowoomba State High School student plays the lead role in Galileo and the cast has been rehearsing since the start of the year to put on the best show possible.

Every tune has been pulled from Queens’ catalogue and the bar has been set high.

“It was an interesting choice, it is a really intense choice,” Parker said.

“A lot of the songs are quite high in register and Freddie’s voice was quite high, so I have been working with a singing coach to get it right.

“I will do it to the best of my ability.”

We Will Rock is on at TSHS Performing Arts Centre from 6.30pm on June 5, 6 and 7, with a matinée performance from 12.30pm on June 7.

Tickets on the door, $10 for students and concession, $15 for adults.
