Toowoomba’s premier park will be transformed into an incredible night-time light and sound experience next year, as part of an attraction expected to inject upwards of $3m into the city’s economy.

World-renowned Australian lighting and mega-media company Laservision has been given the green light by the Toowoomba Regional Council to bring its popular LUNA Light Journeys exhibit to the Queens Park Botanic Gardens in 2024.

The spectacular touring event, which has been a hit in Albury and Brisbane, will see the temporary installation of laser effects, light sculptures, interactive projections, and magical holograms to the gardens.

Tickets for a family-of-four at the Albury experience, called Aurora Albury, are just $30 and children’s entry costs less than $10.

Councillors at Tuesday’s committee meeting endorsed a $41,000 sponsorship package that provides in-kind support such as waiving park hire fees and covering electricity costs.

Council’s tourism and sporting events co-ordinator Andrew Allpass said Laservision predicted the event could add more than $3.45m to the region through tourism.

This figure could potentially be even higher, since it was based on a May 2023 schedule that has since been shifted to the 2024 Easter school holidays.

“As evidenced by several social media posts relating to the Aurora Albury event this price structure has been well received in terms of value for money and the overall experience,” Mr Allpass noted in his report.

“Based on the information supplied in the original submission the Toowoomba LUNA Light Journey installation has the potential to contribute approximately $3.45m to the local economy.

“This represents a return on investment ratio in the order of 72:1 when considering council’s sponsorship contribution.

“Laservision have a reputation for delivering successful special events, tourism and entertainment attractions that drive increased visitation, length of stay, return on investment and community economic benefits.

“LUNA Light Journey installations are a proven concept that present positive social and economic benefits to the destinations where they are delivered.”

The inaugural installation will run from Friday March 22 to Saturday April 13.
