Huge Easter weekend: 10 things to do in the Darling Downs

From open sunflower fields to egg hunts and model trains – there really is a heaps of fun family activities on in Toowoomba over the long weekend.

The Jondaryan Woolshed has a packed program of fun family activities this weekend that includes historical displays, sheep shearing and sheep dog trials, spinning and weaving, a bee keeping demonstration, a wood turning display, live music, family games and markets.

Visitors will be treated to mini train rides with a movie screening from 6.30pm on Saturday in the Woolshed along with line dancing lessons.

Food and drinks will be available to purchase, including stew and damper or a barbecue at the Woolshed.

Limited accommodation is still available, including camping, caravan sites and a range of cabins.

Day visitors are welcome to enjoy the festivities with gates open at 9.30am on Saturday and Sunday.

2. Sunflower weekend

Warraba Sunflowers at Cambooya will open 12 acres of the farm to the public for photos, tours and cuttings at the weekend.

The paddocks will be open through to Easter Monday, from 8am-6pm each day at 439 McNallys Rd.

Entry starts at $5 for children over 5.

3. Easter at the Rail Museum

Explore the Darling Downs rich train history as the DownsSteam Railway and Museum.

The Drayton venue will host a community barbecue with live music, tours, displays and a heritage bus ride along.

Gates open from 9am-3pm. Entry is $5.

4. Easter egg hunt

The annual Easter egg Hunt at Windy Acres Farm will return on Saturday, with families invited to search for eggs and hand painted rocks among the lavender bushes.

This year the farm will have a quiet hour, staring at 8.30am, before the general hunt. It is designed to help children who prefer a less crowded and quieter sensory experience. The numbers will be capped for this hour.

The general hunt starts at 9.30am.

There will also be facing painting, yard games, cool drink and food, with families invited to bring a picnic rug and relax on the grounds.

Gates open from 8.30am, Saturday at 160 Westbrook Rd.

5. Tiny trains at Highfields

The Highfields Pioneer Village will runs its Miniature Train and Model T Bus on Sunday.

The Miniature Steam Loco Myrtle May’s total length is 11.6m and has three passenger carts, along with a water and coal tender, carrying 12 adults or 18 children at a time.

Henry the Model T Ford Bus also gives rides and was manufactured in 1924 and originally used as a school bus for the Kilcoy State School from 1924 to 1940.

This is the perfect opportunity for those people who wish to have a sneak preview of the Village without purchasing a full entry ticket.

6. Eclipse Toowoomba

The award-winning LUNA light show will dazzle audiences in Queens Park all weekend.

Take a journey through the park spectacle which includes light sculptures, lasers and projections, and is sure to delight people of all ages.

Tickets for adults are $15 and $10 for children aged 3-17.

A family ticket is $42.50. Sessions start on Saturday and Sunday night from 6pm

7. Head to the markets

It’s another big weekend to pick up fresh produce.

On Saturday the Toowoomba Farmers Market and Yarraman Markets kick off from 7am, while the Dusty’s Drove Market at Dusty’s Clifton begins at 8am.

On Sunday, you can head along to the PCYC from 7am for the markets on James St.

8. Easter light show

Bring the family and watch the Rowes building light up to celebrate Easter.

Enjoy the surprise new show, laugh as the Easter bunny battles a giant egg, deals with more eggs than you can count, and hits the drums for a keen drum solo.

Travel back in time with Russell St reveries and celebrate the real meaning of Easter.

The display will be beamed upon the Rowes Building and best viewed from the footpath outside the National Hotel or watch from your car.

9. Toowoomba Speedway

Motorsport fans can look forward to a bumper weekend of racing with Toowoomba’s Hi Tec Oils Speedway hosting two days of racing.

The Formula 500 Australian titles headline the event which also includes Junior Formula 500, Production Sedans, Street Stocks and Compact Speedcars racing.

Spectator gates open at 3pm on both days, March 30 and 31, with racing underway at 5pm.

Tickets can be purchased at the gate and online.

10. Easter Feast

The Toowoomba Street Feast will host an Easter Feast at the Showgrounds on Saturday.

It will include food trucks, dessert stalls, boutique retail stalls and music – all for the price of a $2 entry.

Gates open from 4pm until late.
