Double-H Alpacas at Yalangur will open its gates to the public this weekend to celebrate National Alpaca Week.
The Darling Downs stud has been breeding alpacas for more than three decades, with its 350-head herd supplying top-quality fleece.
Owner Margaret Hassell said she moved into alpacas as a way to diversify the farm’s operations.
“We bred them for their fleece, which is light, softer and warmer than sheep’s wool,” she said.
“It also comes in a wide variety of natural colours so it does not need to be dyed, this makes it more environmentally friendly.”
Visitors will be invited to walk through the farm and at times feed and pat the alpacas.
“They look cute and cuddly, but they generally don’t like being picked up,” Ms Hassall said.
“They will happily come up to you, give you a sniff and eat out of your hand though.”
Along with educating visitors, the farm will have a range of handmade clothes on sale at its craft shop.
“My 89-year-old mother knits all sorts of garments, like vests, bootees and scarfs,” Ms Hassall said.
The farm is located at 14 Lobweins Road, Yalangur, and it is open from 10am-4pm, Saturday and Sunday.
Entry is free and the craft shop is cash only.
