New details have emerged about the chain of events that saw actor Jeremy Renner dragged under a massive snow plough.

New details have emerged about how actor Jeremy Renner was crushed by his snow plough, leaving him with horrific injuries.

The Marvel star was trying to save his nephew as the snow plough started sliding sideways, when he was pulled under and crushed on New Year’s Day at his Lake Tahoe property.

The Avengers star had been using the PistenBully snowcat vehicle to pull his adult nephew’s truck out of the snow.

The huge vehicle completely rolled over Renner, leaving him with 30 broken bones, and continued on down the road.

The handbrake on the plough was not engaged and would have stopped the horrific accident, according to a redacted Nevada sheriff’s office incident report.

According to the report, Renner told investigators in hospital that the incident began to unfold after he had towed his nephew’s truck off his driveway.

“The PistenBully snow groomer began sliding causing Renner to exit the vehicle without setting the emergency brake,” the report says, according to CNN, who obtained the report through a public records request.

“Although the PistenBully had some mechanical issues, it is believed based on our mechanical inspection that the parking brake would keep the PistenBully from moving forward. When Renner attempted to stop or divert the PistenBully to avoid injury to (his nephew), he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and run over.”

The report said Renner jumped out of the plough’s cabin when it began sliding sideways, but quickly realised the vehicle was on course to directly hit his nephew.

“He feared the PistenBully was going to hit (his nephew), so he decided to attempt to stop or divert the PistenBully,” the report said, according to CNN.

In order to get back into the cabin, Renner had to climb onto its moving tracks. As he did so, he was ‘immediately pulled under the left side track”, the report said.

CNN said the report indicated “mechanical issues” may have been a factor and noted the brake indicator light inside the plough’s cab was not working.

Renner, known for playing Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is now at home recovering after a lengthy hospital stay.

He is reportedly aware he has a long road to recovery ahead of him, with friends saying it could take up to two years before he is back in fighting shape.

He posted on Instagram last weekend on Saturday after returning home to begin his recovery process.

“Spawned from tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused into uniting actionable love.

“I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and thoughtfulness for my family and I. Much love and appreciation to you all,” he wrote.

“These 30 plus broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens. Love and blessings to you all.”

The incident took place near the Mount Rose Highway, which links Lake Tahoe and south Reno as it straddles the Nevada-California border in the US.

Earlier, the 911 call to emergency services after Renner’s accident was finally released by TMZ.

In the audio, Renner is heard in the background in pain as a neighbour begs a responder for help.

“Someone’s in front of my house; he got run over by a snow plough. He’s been crushed,” the neighbour said, Page Six reports.

“He got crushed up on his right side,” the man continued as he observed the actor’s injuries. “His right chest and upper torso, his ribs, they look like they might be crushed. He’s got a head wound as well.”

Renner was also said to be “short of breath” and in “a lot of pain”.

“We’ve got him covered in blankets,” the neighbour said. “His head’s covered.”

The star appears to be eager to get back onto the snow at his Lake Tahoe property after posting two pictures to Instagram from Nevada – one of snow-covered rooftops with a message saying he missed his “happy place” and another warning people to “be safe” along with an image of a road covered in deep snow.

Close friends of Renner said his condition was “much worse than anyone knows”.

“Jeremy is very aware of the fact that he almost died out there,” a friend told RadarOnline.

“The right side of Jeremy’s chest was crushed, and his upper torso had collapsed. He also had a bad head wound that was bleeding and a leg injury.”

According to the source, he almost “bled out” as he waited for help to arrive, and was “in a lot of pain” and “having difficulty breathing”.

“He knew he was in bad shape and that he might not make it out of this.”

A few days following the accident, he took a selfie showing notable bruises on his face with the caption, “Thank you all for your kind words. I’m too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all”.

The star later shared a clip of himself being pampered by his supportive sister and mother as he received a relaxing scalp massage.
