The arts and theatre industries have been hit hard by the global pandemic, but one way to pick the industry back up is to support local film makers who will be supplying projects and masterpieces for Australia’s longest running film festival which will be arriving in Toowoomba this month.
Nomad Pictures director and festival representative Stephen Payton said the Travelling Film Festival was unique in that it nailed the brief for the target market in Toowoomba perfectly.
“There won’t be any other opportunity to see these movies in Toowoomba again,” he said.
“Having run the Nomad Pictures, I know that the films our target audiences want to see are international films.
“There’s not as much interest in English-speaking films.”
French, Chilean, Finnish, Saudi and Tunisian films will be hitting the big screen at The Strand in a few short weeks.
Mr Payton said in a place like Toowoomba, where arts and culture thrive and were generally well-supported, it was “tremendously important”for locals to continue to nurture the film industry, and homegrown film makers.
“All the short films are home grown talent,” he said.
“The tourism and travelling industries have hit such a low that this is really a great opportunity for people to be able to experience the world even if it is only on the silver screen.
“Toowoomba really wants to put its stamp on the map as an interesting place for people to explore and we have quite a thriving arts scene here so its important to continue and to grow that and nurture it.”
The festival will begin on October 16 at The Strand.
