PRINCE Louis Arthur Charles of Cambridge was welcomed into the world this week and, none are more excited to greet the royal baby than the punters raking it in after taking a chance on the unexpected name.
Bookies were backing Albert as the number one contender for the name of the third child of Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge and according to betting agency Ladbrokes, Louis was a longshot at 20-1 odds.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes, told OK: “Prince Louis has caught both bookies and punters by surprise. With it being one of Prince George’s middle names fans didn’t see it as an obvious front runner for Kate and Wills second son.”
A British punter from Horsham, Sussex, saw her $A450.00 bet on Louis (at 18-1 odds), win her an impressive $A8,200.
The name is believed to be inspired by the Duke of Edinburgh’s favourite uncle, Lord Mountbatten, but Alice Gordon drew inspiration from a new addition to her own family.
“I thought I’d go for a cheeky bet,” the grandmother told The Standard.
Ms Gordon’s grandson, Louis, was born the day after the new royal and she said her windfall will be put aside for her lucky little fella.
Anticipation over the name was high all over the world, after the longest wait for a royal baby name in years.
Prince George and his sister Princess Charlotte’s names were announced two days after their births in 2013 and 2015.
Betting agencies had been monitoring the royal couple’s every move leading up to Louis’s arrival, with odds rapidly changing when hints were dropped they were having a boy, then with speculation on strong name contenders Arthur and Albert.
But Louis came out on top and for a lucky few, they are sitting pretty on their wins.
The newest member of the royal family, whose name is pronounced “Lou-ee”, rather than “Lou-iss”, is fifth in line to the throne, bumping uncle Prince Harry down the order once again.
