Country singer Maren Morris has filed for divorce from her husband Ryan Hurd after five years.
The news comes as a shock because the pair have always been considered a modern country music power couple in the vein of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.
Page Sixreported that Morris cited irreconcilable differences when she filed for divorce on October 2 and requested joint custody of their three-year-old son Hayes.
The sad news comes after Morris announced in September that she was hanging up her guitar and quitting country music.
Morris, 33, explained that couldn’t participate in the “toxic arms” of country music, and couldn’t do the “circus anymore”.
“I couldn’t do this circus anymore, feeling like l have to absorb and explain people’s bad behaviours and laugh it off.
“I just couldn’t do that after 2020 particularly. I’ve changed. A lot of things changed about me that year,” she told the podcast Popcast.
Morris stressed she didn’t want to say “goodbye” but felt she was left no choice and needed to do what was best for her.
“I really cannot participate in the toxic arms of this institution anymore,” she explained.
Morris leaving country music came after she was embroiled in a public social media spat with fellow country music singer Jason Aldean’s wife Brittany Aldean.
In 2022, Aldean wrote that she was thankful her parents didn’t change her “gender” during her “tomboy” phase.
Morris denounced the post, said it was easy not to be a “scumbag human” and told Brittany to keep her opinions to herself and called her a “Barbie”.
A social media war exploded with people taking different sides, and both women were viciously trolled.
Once the dust had settled, Morris told her followers to check on their trans and gay friends.
“Anyone that is in country music and had to look at that bull today and feel subhuman. Check on your friends,” she wrote.
Hurd posted on Instagram in support of Morris when she announced she was leaving country behind and said that she deserves to be “celebrated”, not tolerated, in the country music community.
“I’m so sick of watching my wife get the sh*t kicked out of her by the internet. I’m sick of every talking head having an opinion about what she says. It’s the same every time. Why are you surprised when she calls out something racist or homophobic?” He asked.
