Golden Glennie girls win national education competition against country’s top schools

Three student prodigies from Toowoomba have taken out a win at a national academic competition, where they went head to head against some of the smartest teens in Australia.

Year 9 students from The Glennie School have won the BRAINways Education QUEST 2020 for Queensland

An unstoppable team of young prodigies has defeated schools around the country, and taken the top prize at a national academic competition.

Rheanca Lincoln, Zoe Waters and Sophie Fleming competed in the BRAINways Education The QUEST National competition, where they competed against some of the best and brightest students from schools around the nation.

Deputy Principal and Head of Curriculum Tonia Gloudemans said the school was enormously proud of the girls for their achievements.

“This is a fantastic achievement for the girls and the first time students from The Glennie School have won at the National level,” she said.

Six teams from co-ed schools across Australia competed in a number of key learning areas: Science = Neuroscience of imagination, Humanities = Philosophical, psychological and economical theories of value; Mathematics = Correlation and causation, Network Theory and correlation networks.

The dream team from The Glennie School won convincingly by taking out first place in mathematics, second place in humanities and fourth place in science.

Mathematics expert Zoe said it was a combination of smarts and humour that got them through some of the more challenging exercises.

““For the mathematics session, we had to complete scatter plots to investigate relationships between the two civilisations and draw conclusions to whether causation or correlation was evident through correlation networks. Due to our lightheartedness and ability to find something to laugh about we got through this task in a very positive manner and came away with the win,” she said.

Normally the contest progresses to an international level, however due to coronavirus-induced travel restrictions the remainder of the competition has been cancelled, leaving the girls national champions in their fields.
