Trevor Smith’s award-winning chocolate will soon be enjoyed by thousands of people in China — now he’s asking his fellow residents to do the same.

The owner of homegrown success story Metiisto Artisan Chocolate has expanded the company’s exporting portfolio, with hundreds of packs set to be shipped within weeks.

Mr Smith said the opportunity came from the buyers seeking his product out.

“The Chinese found us from our reputation abroad,” he said.

“They handle their own shipping, they take care of all the distribution in China.

“It’s the best customer we’ve ever worked with.”

Toowoomba chocolatier wins gold medal in London Academy of Chocolate Awards

It comes just a few weeks after Metiisto scored an incredible five gold awards at the Academy of Chocolate Awards, which were judged in London by 35 judges.

Mr Smith said it was hard to overemphasise how significant the achievement was, considering the company’s two-person operation.

“Gold is reserved for unanimous endorsement,” he said.

“Normally we get one gold, we’ve never done this well before.

“There were 1600 entrants and some of these companies are the world’s best chocolate brands.

“These are the best French and Italian manufacturers and beating those guys are amazing.”

Despite the overseas success, Mr Smith said he wanted to see more local retailers stocking his products.

“We would love to sell our chocolate for more money but we can’t — we’re still struggling to pay ourselves,” he said.

“If we were a wine producer, we would be able to charge more money for the product.

“It’s still a niche market in Australia.”

Metiisto’s shopfront is located on Alderley Street in Harristown.
