One of Toowoomba’s most popular restaurants has unveiled a new menu this week, as its owners prepare for the “grand” reopening in its new $1.2m home.
Ice n Spice Indian restaurant owners, couple Jasvinder Jammu and Gurpreet Kaur, are preparing to push hard with their new location on Margaret St in the CBD.
The restaurant, which cost $1.2m to buy the building and complete the fit-out, has been open for a number of months as part of a soft launch.
But Mr Jammu said he and his team of nearly a dozen chefs and servers were preparing an official reopening just before the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.
“We knew our local customers would be very excited and we knew that this was a new kitchen, so we thought we’d give it a soft launch,” he said.
“We still had 90 people for dinner (when we soft launched), so we didn’t put any advertising in.
“It’s newly-built and there are still things we need to sort out while we’re working, but now we’re ready for the grand opening.”
To mark the occasion, the couple has teamed up with new executive chef Jassy Singh (Mr Jammu’s uncle) to revamp the menu and introduce fusion dishes alongside traditional Indian items.
“We’ll be trying to modify each item — butter chicken we can modify and introduce modern styles and spices, (so) everything will be up-to-date,” Mr Singh said.
“Our strategy is, we’re in the right location and we’re trying to hit the market with new things that no one else has in their restaurant,” Mr Jammu added.
The relaunch comes nearly a year after the couple opened Ice and Spice as a small eatery in North Toowoomba, with the business earning a strong local following and multiple awards.
After eventually resettling in the Bell Street Mall, Mr Jammu said he identified Margaret St as a place for more foot traffic to go with its strong takeaway business.
“We have been awarded the best restaurant award from The Chronicle for many years, and TripAdvisor as well,” he said.
“Best delivery restaurant, takeaway restaurant, dine-in restaurant — you can’t go better than this place in Toowoomba (for Indian).
“This is where we’ll be until we retire, because this is a family business started by locals.”
“I want to say thank you to (locals) and the trust they’ve put in us.”
