Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport to host 22 weekly flights in late April as Qantas, Bonza to add to more trips to Sydney, Melbourne

Toowoomba residents will soon have no shortage of flights to choose from, with the three carriers servicing the city preparing to ramp up offerings from Wellcamp Airport. See the deals here.

Australia 'absolutely' needs competition among local airlines

Toowoomba’s Wellcamp Airport will soon be hosting 22 domestic flights a week to multiple destinations, as the three carriers committed to servicing the city ramp up their offers to passengers.

QantasLink announced it would increase its number of flights to Sydney from four to six, reintroducing the popular “double dailies” on Thursday and Friday across April only.

While airport leadership say it is likely a coincidence, the offer does come the same month ultra low-cost carrier Bonza plans to launch from Toowoomba to Melbourne, Townsville and the Whitsundays from April 17.

QantasLink, Bonza and Rex will all be operating 22 flights per week from Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport by the end of April 2023.

Along with Rex Airlines, which flies to Charleville and Brisbane among other Queensland destinations, it means there will be nearly two dozen flights out of Wellcamp during the final week of April.

New Wellcamp general manager Kellie Banditt said she hoped residents backed the offerings from carriers next month.

“(For QantasLink), it’s just a short-term change to what they’ve done here and it’s based on the need for it,” she said.

“Hopefully it will be enough of an impact that we can put on these flights long-term — from our perspective, that would be the goal, it’s up to Qantas what they want to do.

“They probably want to have their piece of the market and they’re the only ones that fly to Sydney (from Wellcamp).

“It’s increasing the awareness in the number of flights coming out of Wellcamp — by the end of April, there will be 22 weekly flights, not including any charters.”

Ms Banditt, who was poached from Bonza by airport owner Wagner Corporation, said extra flights would further establish Toowoomba as a growing tourism destination.

“I would hope Bonza is noticing Wellcamp is getting more traction,” she said.

“The awareness is starting to grow with the tourism bodies and councils – they’re understanding the value of putting Wellcamp on the map and making Toowoomba a destination.”

Bonza have promised flights to its three destinations at $50 per flight hour.

Currently you can fly to Sydney on QantasLink as cheaply as $256 one-way, or fly to Brisbane on Rex from $139 one-way.

Residents can buy tickets with Bonza using its phone app.
