THE owners of the main supermarket in the Western Downs town of Tara are preparing to celebrate the facility's $5 million redevelopment.
The Western Downs Co-Operative, which owns Foodworks stores in Millmerran, Tara and Dalby, will on Saturday open its new 2000sq m complex.
Co-op secretary Michael Manly said the new supermarket took eight years of planning and a full 12 months to construction.
"It is somewhat of a contrast to the old 600sq m store adjacent to the new building which closed its doors for the last time on June 23, after 70 years of trading that commenced in 1948," he said.
"The new facility will enable this rather unique fully community-owned enterprise to stock an expansive range of product lines and brands in a customer friendly temperature-controlled environment with plenty of parking space available."
Mr Manly said the Foodworks was one of the town's biggest employers, with more than 50 casual and full-time workers on the payroll.
"The Tara store offers free delivery to customers in the town area, as well as the delivery of bulk purchases in the outlying district," he said.
