The iconic AR Bailey building, which stands the heart of Toowoomba’s CBD, is receiving a long-overdue facelift while its new owners look for fresh tenants.
The building was sold to a group of investors in 2024 for about $2.9 million.
In that time, workers gutted the building, removed the ancient elevator and opened up the windows boarded over by the previous owner, Lincraft.
Drew Camm from DC Commercial sold the building and said there had been significant interest as the build was suitable for a retail, hospitality or office use.
“The site will be a lot tidier in 6-8 weeks,” he said.
“We believe we will be welcoming out first tenants by the end of the year.
“As we finish painting the outside, people will start to realise there is a fair bit of action inside.”
The building is one of several in the CBD to be renovated and converted in a mixed use tenancy.
They include the old Toowoomba Foundry, the Rowes building and the Piggott’s Building.
Work is also underway building a new head office for the People First Bank at the former Catholic Care site in Ruthven Street.
Mr Camm said old buildings like the AR Bailey Building were challenging to renovate but were full of hidden surprises.
“We have opened up all of the windows and it has blown us away with how much extra light there is,” he said.
“So many of them were covered over.”
