OMG Decadent Donuts wins big at national baking awards, Toowoomba franchisees excited by win

It’s true - the best doughnuts in Australia are being baked right here in Toowoomba, after a national franchise swept the competition at the Excellence in Baking Awards.

There’s no holes in this claim — you can buy Australia’s three best doughnuts in the same shop located in the Toowoomba CBD.

The local owners of the Toowoomba OMG Decadent Donuts store are celebrating after the franchise cleared the whole podium for the gourmet doughnut category at the Excellence in Baking Awards in Melbourne.

The winning doughnut was the Brisbane-based company’s Spicy Ranga, which combines ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, cardamom and cloves, while the silver and bronze prizes went to its Dusty Queen (orange and cinnamon) and Coffee Coffee Yum Yum.

OMG also placed second for best cinnamon doughnut at the event, which is organised by the Baking Association of Australia.

The news is a sweet treat for Toowoomba franchisees Robert Gillis and Rob Sampson, who will soon celebrate 12 months in their new shop in the Australia Arcade off Ruthven St.

“It was all blind-tasting, so the judges didn’t know who produced it,” Mr Sampson said.

“Everything was made that day and delivered on site for the awards, the boys from head office went down there and made the doughnuts.”

Mr Sampson said the pair planned to scale up their business later this year, including more deliveries as well as branching into events and functions to complement the shop and market appearances.

“Our business grows every day, we’re in a bizarre location, but we see ourselves as a destination shop,” he said.

“All of those markets are our core business, the shop is secondary to that.

“We’ve seen steady growth over the region (and) after September, we’re looking at increasing our delivery days.

“We’re doing it ourselves, so we’re not passing it onto the consumer.”
