Australians are tipped to spend $1.3bn at the Boxing Day sales this year, with household goods, clothing and accessories top of the list.

Shoppers are expected to spend a record $3.7bn in the week after Christmas, according to the Australian Retailers Association and Roy Morgan.

Grand Central marketing manager Julie Thompson said Boxing Day was a great time to bag a bargain with some retailers offering discounts by as much as 60 per cent.

“Our retailers are offering some terrific sales at the moment, so it’s the perfect time for a little retail therapy – and spend those Christmas gift cards,” she said.

Ms Thompson said retailers saw strong customer traffic in the lead-up to Christmas and was expecting Boxing Day to be “just as popular”.

ARA chief industry affairs officer Fleur Brown said the spending boost would provide retailers with some cautious confidence as they head into the New Year.

“These post-Christmas figures show there remains a healthy appetite from Australians to make the most of Boxing Day sales,” he said.

Mr Brown said in the face of challenging economic conditions shoppers had shifted their attention to sales events “to make their dollars go further”.

“Whilst many Australians used Black Friday to shop earlier than ever for Christmas gifts, the focus for Boxing Day is typically on a gift for self.”

National Retail Association interim chief executive Lindsay Carroll said the tough economic conditions meant retailers were offering exceptional value to shoppers.

“This is one of the most competitive years for retail spending, and Australians can expect a genuine bargain and some truly significant discounts,” she said.
