Australia’s leading craft brewed soft drink brand has taken a new direction and launched a low sugar range to appeal to people wanting a “guilt-free” beverage experience.
Family-owned Bundaberg Brewed Drinks says its ‘Refreshingly Light’ range is part of a commitment to expand its drink range.
The Queensland company has been brewing craft soft drinks since 1968, has created three
distinctive flavours that contain only 20 calories per can and a three-star health rating.
Renowned for its classic Ginger Beer and Sarsparilla flavours in glass bottles, the company has rolled out its Raspberry & Pomegranate, Lemon & Watermelon and Apple and Lychee flavours.
With the tagline ‘Light On Sugar, Full On Flavour’, the ‘Refreshingly Light’ line has its own look and feel including dual-colour packaging to represent fruit pairings and being offered in 4 x 250ml slimline can packs because of portability and convenience.
Bundaberg Brewed Drinks chief executive John McLean said consumers are looking for low sugar drinks but were still seeking a premium brewed beverage.
“Our research shows people are increasingly seeking a guilt-free beverage experience and we have worked tirelessly to create a range that extracts maximum flavour while offering low sugar, minimal calories and no artificial sweeteners, colours or flavours,” he said.
“We feel that being able to brew something and create it with low sugar really hits all the marks.”
Mr McLean said the new product will roll out in Australia and New Zealand and then overseas.
“We’ve presented it to our partners in Asia and in Europe and we’ve got lots of strong inquiries from a number of different markers – South Korea, China, Romania and different zones within the European area,” he said.
“We have a full research and development team that’s constantly working on new flavours and variants and we have a new variant going into South Korea later in the year recognising our 10th anniversary there.”
The company was established in Bundaberg in 1960 as a bottling and fermenting business and the Fleming family bought it in 1968.
In 1995, the company changed its name to Bundaberg Brewed Drinks and now can be found in more than 60 countries. It employs about 275 people in Australia and overseas.
In 2022, Bundaberg Brewed Drinks was named the 2022 Queensland Exporter of the Year.
Its new brewery produces about 51,000 non-alcoholic drink bottles an hour and there is room for expansion.
