The search for a missing occupant after fire tore through a house in Kyabram north of Melbourne has ended in tragic circumstances.

Victoria Police confirmed a body had been found inside a home in Allen Street just before midday on Monday.

Police have been told the fire started at the Kyabram property, about 200km north of Melbourne, just after 5am.

Leading Senior Constable Natalie Dean earlier said a 40-year-old man was able to escape the blaze before emergency services arrived, but a second person was missing.

The body of the missing person was found later in the morning, with police stating it was yet to be formally identified.

Senior Constable Dean said the cause of the blaze was still to be established, and the investigation was ongoing.

Seven CFA crews Tongala, Kyabram and Echuca fought the blaze to bring it under control just before 5.30am on Monday.
