Donald Trump reveals conversation with Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum
Donald Trump says he has got a commitment from President Claudia Sheinbaum on migration, announces fentanyl crackdown ahead of his punishing tariff plan.
Donald Trump has committed to running a “large scale United States Advertising Campaign” to crack down on drugs and expose the “horror” of fentanyl use in America after speaking with Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum.
The President-elect spoke with Ms Sheinbaum on Wednesday evening (Thursday AEDT), just two days after announcing he would use executive orders to slap a 25 per cent tariff on all Mexican goods on the first day of his Presidency.
A further 25 per cent tariff would also be applied to goods from Canada, and an additional 10 per cent tariff on products from China. Explaining the move earlier this week, Mr Trump said the measure was aimed at halting the flow of illegal migrants and drugs from crossing over into the United States.
Posting on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT), the President-elect said that he had “just had a wonderful conversation with the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheibuam Pardo.”
“She has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border,” he said. “We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive drug inflow into the United States, and also, U.S. consumption of these drugs.”
Mr Trump said it was a “very productive conversation.”
“I will be working on a large scale United States Advertising Campaign, explaining how bad Fentanyl is for people to use — Millions of lives being so needlessly destroyed,” he said.
“By the time the Campaign is over, everyone will know how really bad the horror of this Drug is.”
In her letter to Mr Trump, which she read aloud at a press conference the previous day, Ms Sheinbaum warned that imposing tariffs on Mexican goods would fail to halt illegal migration or drug trafficking.
Ms Sheinbaum also argued that the opioid crisis was “fundamentally a public health and consumption issue within your society.”
Following their conversation, Mr Trump said that “Mexico will stop people from going to our Southern Border, effectively immediately.” “THIS WILL GO A LONG WAY TOWARD STOPPING THE ILLEGAL INVASION OF THE USA,” he posted.
Ms Sheinbaum also posted on social media that she “had an excellent conversation with President Donald Trump. We discussed Mexico’s strategy on the migration phenomenon and I shared that caravans are not arriving at the northern border because they are being taken care of in Mexico.”
“We also discussed strengthening collaboration on security issues within the framework of our sovereignty and the campaign we are carrying out in the country to prevent the consumption of fentanyl,” she said.
