The sudden departure of F. Murray Abraham from the Apple comedy series Mythic Quest is said to have come after sexual misconduct allegations were made against the star.
The 83-year-old Oscar winner had a leading role in the show before his exit was announced a year ago. The Lionsgate studio did not give a reason, saying only: “We do not comment on matters concerning personnel.” There was also no comment from Abraham about his departure.
However, Rolling Stone magazine has reported that at least two claims of misconduct were made against the actor. He is said to have initially been warned and told to stay away from some of the Mythic Quest actresses.
It said that after a second complaint was taken to Rob McElhenney, the co-owner of Wrexham football club as well as the star and creator of the show, Abraham’s departure was announced. Abraham has been contacted by The Times for comment.
Mythic Quest is set inside a video game studio where a massively popular game is produced. Abraham played CW Longbottom, a revered writer who is out of touch with his younger colleagues.
The character was written out in the first episode of the show’s third season, broadcast in November. Viewers were told Longbottom had terminal cancer and had taken matters into his own hands with a Thelma & Louise-inspired death. He drove off a cliff in the Grand Canyon and his remains were launched into space.
Before the premiere of Mythic Quest’s third season McElhenney said he wanted to give Abraham a fitting farewell. “It’s a bummer to not have Murray in this season,” he said.
“But we recognise that CW is a beloved character and obviously a huge part of the show.”
Abraham won the best actor Oscar for his lead role in the 1984 period drama Amadeus, and has recently stared in hit series Homeland and the second season of The White Lotus.
