Elon Musk has installed queen-sized mattresses in converted Twitter conference rooms so employees can sleep at work, it is understood.

Officials in San Francisco are investigating claims that Mr Musk converted the office space in a possible violation of building regulations.

According to Forbes, employees arriving at the Twitter headquarters on Monday were surprised to find mattresses in the room. “It’s not a good look,” one said. “It’s another unspoken sign of disrespect. There is no discussion. Just like, beds showed up.”

There were said to have been “four to eight” beds on each floor.

After Mr Musk’s $US44bn purchase of Twitter in October he began sacking workers and told remaining staff they would have to commit themselves to a “hardcore” working culture.

Patrick Hannan, the communications director for the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection, said: “We need to make sure the building is used as intended. There are different building code requirements for residential buildings, including those for short-term stays.”

Mr Hannan said the department was seeking to conduct an inspection and had contacted the Twitter HQ building manager for more information. Mr Musk criticised the investigation and London Breed, the city’s mayor. He tweeted: “So city of SF attacks companies providing beds for tired employees instead of making sure kids are safe from fentanyl. Where are your priorities (London Breed)!?”

Last month Esther Crawford, Twitter’s director of product management, was photographed wearing an eye mask while tucked up in a sleeping bag on an office floor.

The world’s wealthiest man has repeatedly criticised the working culture he inherited at Twitter and one of his first acts as the new boss was to end the company’s work-from-home policy. Twitter had previously told employees that they could work from home “for ever”.
