Kim Kardashian blasted for damaging Marilyn Monroe’s dress
Kim Kardashian caused ‘significant’ damage to the dress she lost 7kg to fit into, and which Monroe wore to serenade JFK in 1962.
Celebrity Kim Kardashian has been accused of causing “significant” damage to the dress Marilyn Monroe wore to serenade John F. Kennedy for his 45th birthday.
The reality television star, 41, was criticised for walking the red carpet of last month’s Met Gala in the garment, which was loaned to her by Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! museum.
Kardashian said she had to lose 7kg to fit into the gown and quickly switched into a replica after posing for pictures at the Met Gala in New York.
But pictures shared by Scott Fortner, who claims to have the world’s largest private collection of Monroe’s property and archives, appear to show crystals on the dress hanging by a thread while others are missing entirely. Other images show frayed material on the dress.
“Without question, the damage is significant,” he wrote on Instagram.
Monroe wore the dress when she sang Happy Birthday, Mr President to Kennedy in 1962. She died later that year aged 36. Kardashian told Vogue: “I’m extremely respectful to the dress and what it means to American history.”
However, the International Council of Museums said: “Historic garments should not be worn by anybody, public or private figures.”
