Donald Trump claimed yesterday that African-Americans were “so thankful” to him for exposing Democratic corruption in cities with large black communities.

The US President said he was “the least racist person there is anywhere in the world” and that no president had accomplished as much for African-Americans as he had in his first two years in office, adding that black unemployment was at an all-time low.

Leading black politicians, on the other hand, had squandered resources and prolonged problems for their constituents, Mr Trump claimed.

“The African-American community is so thankful,” he said. “They call me and they say ‘Finally, somebody is telling the truth’.”

The remarks follow weekend tweets where he claimed that Baltimore was a rodent-infested hellscape where no human should live, causing an outcry from residents and critics on the left, who said that the description was racially tinged.

Mr Trump claimed yesterday that residents in Baltimore “are living in hell” because of “tremendous corruption”.

He made the comments as he was due to speak at a ceremony commemorating the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, the first English settlement in the US. Black legislators boycotted the speech and protesters gathered.
