Ghislaine Maxwell’s family offered unwavering support during her trial but there was one figure close to the sex trafficker who remained conspicuous by his absence.

Mystery surrounds the marriage of Maxwell, 60, and Scott Borgerson, a 46-year-old technology entrepreneur the socialite is said to have wed in 2016.

News of the union only emerged following her arrest in July 2020, when prosecutors made the revelation during a bail hearing.

The couple is believed to have met more than eight years ago through their mutual interest in ocean preservation at a time when Borgerson was still married to his previous wife, whom he divorced in 2015. During their divorce, Borgerson’s former wife claimed he drank too much and hit her.

Despite the secretive nature of the marriage – no official record has been discovered – details have emerged that shed some light on the couple.

Borgerson, a former US coast guard officer, grew up in rural Missouri and is the founder of a maritime investments company called CargoMetrics.

In July, The Times revealed that Maxwell used Borgerson’s business to take out a £2 million mortgage against her London home after she had agreed a confidential compensation deal with Virginia Giuffre, who has accused the Duke of York of abusing her. The duke denies the claims. The mortgage deal provided evidence of Maxwell relying on her husband’s finances. He had also volunteered to pay a $US25 million bond to free her on bail before her trial, but a federal judge ruled Maxwell posed a significant flight risk.

Maxwell and Borgerson lived together at his seven-bedroom seafront property in Manchester-by-the-Sea, a small town in Massachusetts.

She left in December 2019 when she bought a secluded home a two-hour drive away in Bradford, New Hampshire. The FBI raided the address the following year and Maxwell has been in detention ever since.

While his wife was in a Manhattan courtroom, Borgerson, who has two children from his first marriage, was spotted in Manchester-by-the-Sea.

According to the Daily Mail, he may have moved in with Kris McGinn, a mother of two and local journalist.

Maxwell’s marriage was so secret that even her brother Ian said he had no idea that they had tied the knot. He told the London Evening Standard in June that Borgerson was “off limits” and his sister wanted to protect her husband and his children.
