Musk scents an opportunity to make millions
If you are the kind of person who wants to harness the ‘essence of repugnant desire’ while whiffing of a singed fringe, Elon Musk thinks he has the answer.
If you are the kind of person who wants to harness the “essence of repugnant desire” while whiffing of a singed fringe, Elon Musk thinks he has the answer.
The mercurial billionaire has announced he is selling a perfume called “Burnt Hair”, which he has compared to smelling like “leaning over a candle at the dinner table”.
Musk said he has already sold 10,000 bottles, with the product due to be sent to customers next year. “The finest fragrance on Earth!” Musk tweeted as he introduced the perfume to the world, adding that it could be bought using Dogecoin, the cryptocurrency of which he is a fan.
“With a name like mine, getting into the fragrance business was inevitable - why did I even fight it for so long!?” Musk added.
The world’s richest person first mused about the fragrance last month, tweeting a throwaway joke to his 108 million followers.
“’Burnt Hair’ - Scent for Men by Singed,” he said. “Stand out in a crowd! Get noticed as you walk through the airport!”
The perfume continues Musk’s tradition of touting products as jokes before turning them into goods. In 2018 he raised $15.9 million by selling dollars 500 flamethrowers via his The Boring Company tunnelling firm.

Not all Musk’s business dealings can be classed as jokes, however. The protracted saga surrounding his purchase of Twitter appears to be nearing a conclusion. He agreed this month to complete the $70 billion deal after months of legal wrangling.
