Donald Trump picks his son’s fiancee as Greek envoy amid rumours of split

Kimberly Guilfoyle, a former lawyer and Fox News host, was offered the ambassador job after reports she has split from the president-elect’s son.

The present US ambassador to Greece is a Greek-speaking businessman who traces his roots to the village of Platanos in the mountains of Nafpaktia. The next nominee for the job is a former lawyer and Fox News host who was a fundraiser for Donald Trump.

Kimberly Guilfoyle, 55, was described as a “close friend and ally” by the president-elect as he announced her posting to Athens hours after claims that she and his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr, had ended their engagement.

The posting would be the latest twist in a career filled with them. Guilfoyle paid her way through law school partly by working as a Victoria’s Secret underwear model and became a prosecutor in the San Francisco district attorney’s office where, according to her 2015 book Making The Case: How to Be Your Own Best Advocate, she was known as “the Hurricane”.

She became a legal analyst for Fox News and later a talkshow host but left in 2018 amid claims that she had been accused of impropriety, denied by her lawyer. She was married to Gavin Newsom, the Democrat governor of California, and then to the furniture magnate Eric Villency, with whom she has a teenage son.

Guilfoyle and Trump Jr confirmed their engagement in early 2022 but he was said to have been seen recently with Bettina Anderson, a socialite, in Palm Beach. On Tuesday the New York Post reported that Guilfoyle and Trump Jr were no longer engaged.
