Donald Trump says he would block John Bolton from his impeachment trial because they had fallen out and his former national security adviser might reveal what he really thought of world leaders.
The US President dismissed calls for several key officials to appear on national security grounds, despite the White House being accused of a cover-up. Trump is on trial for abuse of power by withholding $US400m ($584m) in military aid to Ukraine and obstructing congress inquiries into the allegation, which he says is a hoax.
Bolton was said to be furious about the alleged interference in Ukraine. He was barred by the White House from earlier hearings but says he is willing to testify if issued with a subpoena from the Senate.
Trump, who fired Bolton in September, told a press conference in Davos: “He knows some of my thoughts … what happens if he reveals what I think about a certain leader and it’s not very positive … I don’t know if we left on the best of terms. I would say probably not, you know, so you don’t like people testifying when they didn’t leave on good terms — and that was due to me, not due to him.”
Adam Schiff, the Democratic chairman of the house intelligence committee, began the prosecution case on Thursday. Schiff, 59, said Trump’s alleged actions met the fears of America’s founding fathers that “a man would seek to perpetuate himself in office by inviting foreign interference in cheating in an election”.
Both the White House defence team and Republican leaders want to wrap up the trial without witnesses being called. Democrats accuse the defence of seeking to keep key documents and testimony away from the public.
