The Duke and Duchess of Sussex claim they were forced to move to the Los Angeles home of billionaire film producer Tyler Perry because the Prince of Wales ended their funding and their ­security was withdrawn.

Much of the bitterness towards the royal family appears to be as a result of Prince Charles’ decision to withdraw the couple’s private allowance when they stepped down as working royals.

Harry, 36, told Oprah Winfrey: “My family literally cut me off ­financially. I’ve got what my mum left me and without that, we would not have been able to do this. I think she saw it coming. I certainly felt her presence throughout this whole process.”

Harry inherited about £7m from Princess Diana, who died in 1997, and £3m from his great-grandmother in 2002. His mother’s legacy may have grown significantly before he was entitled to take control of it at age 30.

David McClure, author of Royal Legacy, an investigation of royal finances, said he believed it was “highly likely” Harry received income from other family trusts that had not been made public. Meghan, 39, brought an estimated £3m to their marriage from her acting career.

Prince Charles had given the couple about £2.5m a year through the Duchy of Cornwall, according to the most recent ­accounts. The Queen also contributed to their running costs through the Duchy of Lancaster.

When the Sussexes announced they would be stepping down as working senior royals, Buckingham Palace said the couple would “no longer receive public funds for royal duties”.

They have signed deals with Spotify and Netflix thought to be worth well over £100m, and now live in a multi-million-dollar house in the celebrity enclave of Montecito, California.
