Goodbye Britain: Harry jets into new life with Meghan
Prince Harry has reunited with his wife and baby in Canada after burying the hatchet with his brother.
Prince Harry has flown back to Canada to be reunited with his wife and baby son, having buried the hatchet with his brother Prince William in secret peace talks that ended their two-year feud.
The Duke of Sussex’s decision to step back from royal life has also been endorsed by the chairman of his flagship charity.
Harry left Britain for the foreseeable future after meeting Prime Minister Boris Johnson and world leaders at the UK-Africa Investment Summit in London, likely to be one of his few remaining official engagements before the Sussexes leave the monarchy in the northern spring.
Harry gave an emotional speech on Sunday night, saying he had “no other option” but to give up his official royal duties and forge a new life in Canada, where wife Meghan and son Archie are setting up home.
Harry had an informal 20-minute meeting with Mr Johnson without aides present, and a series of meetings with leaders from Morocco, Malawi and Mozambique. He was absent from an evening reception marking the conference at Buckingham Palace, hosted by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
A royal source told London newspaper The Sun: “William and Harry have spent time together privately working on their relationship and discussing their future.
“It has been groundbreaking in terms of saving their bond as brothers and has been totally driven by them.
“Kate and Meghan, who was in Canada, did join in with some of the talks on more than one occasion — another sign of a real thaw in their relationship. Things are better. They decided to cut out all the toxic people stirring around them to deal with each other man to man as brothers.”
The split between the brothers has grown over the past two years. William was furious when Harry appeared to confirm the rift during a now infamous documentary on his and Meghan’s South African tour, but the Duke of Cambridge later spoke of his sadness at the distance between the brothers, admitting: “Harry and I are now separate entities.”
There has been no recovery in Harry’s relationship with Prince Charles and Camilla, The Sun reported.
Johnny Hornby, chairman of Sentebale, a charity co-founded by Harry and Lesotho’s Prince Seeiso, said the duke had indicated the solution was not something he “ideally” wanted.
Asked whether it mattered to the Africa-based charity, which supports youngsters living with HIV, if Harry was royal or had a title, Mr Hornby told Radio 4’s Today program: “No, I don’t think it matters at all. I think he has a kind of unique ability and an aura around him when he’s with children, when he’s with any gathering, I think his passion comes over.
“We don’t need from Sentebale’s perspective his title, we just need his time and passion and he’s committed to give us that.”
At a private event for Sentebale on Sunday in London, Harry spoke about leaving royal duties in a bid for a “more peaceful life” for his family. “What I want to make clear is we’re not walking away, and we certainly aren’t walking away from you,” he told guests.
“Our hope was to continue serving the Queen, the Commonwealth and my military associations, without public funding. Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible.”
