Piers Morgan issues blunt warning to Australia over 'ridiculous' virtue signalling
Controversial broadcaster Piers Morgan has delivered a blunt warning to Australia over transgender issues, claiming the nation has fallen behind global trends.
Piers Morgan has a simple message for Australia and it’s one that the progressive left, and many politicians and the judiciary may not like: “wake up”.
The opinionated broadcaster and author said in the United Kingdom, which has had the Supreme Court rule women are biological women, and the United States where President Donald Trump immediately put an end to men competing in women’s sports, that “we are over the worst of woke’’.
However Australia is an outlier and appears to be falling well behind the global trend with the Australian Human Rights Commission, Equality Australia and its patron, the Governor-General Sam Mostyn, supporting a system where trans rights overrides biological women’s rights.
Morgan, who has written a book Woke is Dead told the Weekend Australian: “My message to all these Australian bodies that are still doubling down on this bullshit is “stop”.
“You know, women didn’t fight a war for 100 years to win rights to equality, to have that vaporised at the altar of virtue signalling. It’s ridiculous.”
Morgan predicts that in a few years time “we’ll look back and go, what the hell were we doing pandering to this nonsense?”
“There’s nothing equal about what’s happening. It is creating a new inequality. Where if this was drug doping, everyone would say, this is outrageous, stop it.”
In Australia trans athletes are encouraged to compete in their chosen gender at community levels, leading to situations like the Flying Bats football team which fields biological men in the North West Sydney women’s competition, and dominating it for the past two years.
At elite levels in Australian sport there are still some sports which allow biological men to compete against women if they suppress their testosterone levels.
This is often ruled to be below 2.5 nanomoles per litre for a year or two year even though this arbitrary figure is still double the average testosterone levels of biological women.
Recent scientific advice to the International Olympic Committee shows biological men retain strength and endurance benefits even after suppressing testosterone.
Allowing biological men to compete at any level in sport means that girls and women are denied positions in some teams, face barriers to progress through the sport from junior to senior level and in some instances, as seen at the Paris Olympics in boxing, face an increased risk of injury.
“The advantage that biological men have, actual men, have against biological women, females, is obviously the reason we separate sexes in sport,’’ said Morgan.
Morgan said that woke is not dead, but what he thinks is dead is the public tolerance of it.
“Those who do not identify with this nonsense are beginning to be a lot louder and moving a lot quicker in opposing outbreaks of wokeism when you see it,’’ he said. This week the World’s Strongest Woman was revealed to be a biological male, but had hidden it from the organisers.
“I think that the wokies themselves don’t want to admit it. But every time there’s an outbreak of some woke idiocy now, I’m seeing more and more of an immediate backlash and a U-turn. And so I do believe we’re over the worst of this.
“So we saw that with the World’s Strongest Woman. A great example where, you know, two years ago, no one would be allowed to criticise it.
“You would lose your job in certain places if you criticised that. Whereas this time, immediately, the organisation who said they didn’t realise this person was a trans woman, i.e. a biological man, immediately disqualified and removed the titles.”
We meet inside the London studio where he films Piers Morgan Uncensored for airing online and Morgan is across all of the issues of the day ready to thunder, cajole and interview his guests. President Trump, a friend of two decades, had texted him the day before as the thaw of their tumultuous friendship continues. Morgan explains the difficult line he treads between friendship and his job.
“He’s the most polarising, divisive figure probably in political history, and so you’ve got to somehow navigate the path between being a long-time friend of somebody who you genuinely like, and I do genuinely like him, but also do your job as a journalist,’’ he said.
And as for that dramatic criticism of Meghan Markle and her subsequent official complaint to ITV about Morgan refusing to believe her claims of suicidal thoughts and mental health issues to Oprah Winfrey, four and a half years later Morgan said he would do the same again.
“Even as I was sailing off into the sunset I just thought this is really about free speech. And one of the cornerstones of my book is really about protecting free speech and how important that is. Obviously I had the right to disbelieve her if I wanted to, or to be critical of her and Prince Harry for the despicable stuff they were coming out with which to this day remains unsubstantiated: the racism claims, the mental health claims.
“A lot of it was just baloney. Thought so then. Thought that now. The only difference is I was told I had to apologise or leave. Now I’d be told probably to apologise for believing her or I’d have to leave because it would be so damaging to my credibility.”
Woke is Dead: How Common Sense Triumphed in an Age of Total Madness by Piers Morgan is out now, published by HarperCollins.
