Road Test: Waeco MyFridge MF-05

A MINIATURE fridge. We're talking really miniature: the interior dimensions are 14cm wide, 14cm deep and 25cm tall.

WHAT is it?

A miniature fridge. We're talking really miniature: the interior dimensions are 14cm wide, 14cm deep and 25cm tall.

Cut the fancy science talk. What does that mean in the real world?
You can fit four big sandwiches in it. Or an eight-pack of individual yoghurts. Or six cans of soft drink.

Cute! Is it for elves?
Don't be daft. Waeco, the manufacturer, says this "personal refrigerator", which weighs just 3.3kg, is for use "in the car, at work, at the beach or even at the footy".

How so?
As well as running off the mains, you can also plug it into the 12V cigarette lighter socket in your car (the adapter is supplied). We're not sure how you'd use it at the beach or the footy; you'd need a bloody long power cord.

What's the performance like?
Waeco claims it provides cooling up to 20C below the outside ambient temperature. That sounds about right. You can't adjust the chill factor, though.

Anything else?
Yes, you can flick a switch at the back to turn it from a fridge into a food-warmer: it heats up to 65C.

I see a potential problem with that feature.
Yes, you can just imagine the scene: "You idiot - now we've all got hot beer."
